It has been only a week since Sri Lanka and India endured in an ODI match where Sri Lanka managed to be runner ups narrowly losing to Australia in the 3rd Final. The Asia Cup is a more important tournament for both teams and it will be more comforting playing in Asia because of the pitches and humid conditions.
Match Information :
March 13, Dhaka
Starting Time: 1400 Local Time
How the Teams Stand:
In the Commonwealth Bank series that has recently concluded India were sent home early and Sri Lanka fell to defeat to Australia in the final. The weakness that was displayed from both teams recently was the bowling where both teams either failed to keep the run rate down or take wickets. Sri Lanka had a good tournament in Australia but a feature of their game that failed to impress was keeping the run rate down at crucial times. India really struggled to take wickets but on a slow pitch in Dhaka they will have a better chance. The batting of both teams is usually strong but it looks like the Sri Lankan batsmen are in better form.
In Australia Lasith Malinga was the leading wicket taker with 18 wickets but in the later stages of the tournament his poor economy rate had overshadowed his achievements. With Dhaka being a slow pitch he should be able to make his figures stand out but for Sri Lanka he is crucial as he is a genuine wicket taker and the limited pace bowlers in Sri Lanka are a worrying sign in the next few years. Sachin Tendulkar remains in the squad after what might have been his worst Australian tour yet and with Sehwag rested he is guaranteed to play unless injury occurs. He only needs this century and then it looks like he will retire but he has really struggled of late but scoring it against Sri Lanka would top off his career.
The pitch was slow in the 1st match of the Asian Cup where Pakistan were marginal winners. The pitch should stay the same if not even slower and this will make batting very tough.
Sri Lanka should play a similar XI that lost to Australia in the 3rd Final.
Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Upul Tharanga, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Rangana Herath.
