3rd ODI: New Zealand vs Bangladesh at Saxton Oval, Nelson, Dec 29 - 2016, Cricket Highlights.

It was another emphatic performance from New Zealand, which helped them to whitewash Bangladesh and clinch the ODI series 3-0.

The match, which was a dead rubber, presented an opportunity for Bangladesh to salvage some pride by winning it and avoiding a clean sweep. However, they couldn’t stop the Kiwi batsmen from chasing down the target and ended up on the losing side for the third straight time.

It wasn’t the case that they didn’t begin well. Their openers, in Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes, provided them with the best possible start by stitching a 100-run partnership in 21 overs. But once they lost the wicket of Kayes on the score of 102, it triggered the collapse. Just like in the last match, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and slumped down to 179-7 at the end of the 40th over.

Apart from wicket-keeper Nurul Hussain – who made a useful 44 - the middle order, once again, failed to contribute, which resulted in Bangladesh finishing with only 236 runs on the board.

The target was not a difficult one for the hosts, but they suffered a few initial hiccups when they came out to bat. Firstly, they lost their in-form player Tom Latham in the second over of the innings and then lost Guptill due to a hamstring injury. The loss of the openers, however, didn’t affect New Zealand much as Kane Williamson and Neil Broom joined hands together to take their team closer to the finishing line.

Broom was a bit lucky early into his innings when he was dropped for nought on the bowling of Mustafizur Rahman. The batsman, as a result, made the Bangladeshis pay for the missed opportunity and went on to build a match-winning partnership of 185 runs along with his skipper.

At first, Williamson was the aggressor between the two, as he played some delightful shots and raced away to his half-century in just 57 balls. After playing second fiddle to his skipper for the initial half during the partnership, Broom decided to take the aggressive approach as he counter-attacked the Bangladeshi bowlers and zoomed past Williamson in the race to hundred.

Sadly, for Broom, he fell only 3 runs short of a back-to-back century and was dismissed on 97 by Mustafizur. The wicket, however, came very late for the visitors as New Zealand were just 42 runs away from the victory. The formalities were completed by Williamson and Neesham, who remained not out on the scores of 95 and 28, respectively and helped their team to register a comprehensive 8-wicket win in 41.2 overs.
