After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Pakistan would have been questioning themselves when Kenya showed brilliant discipline in the field as well as with the ball. Within no time, Kenya had gotten 10 overs in and managed to send the Pakistani openers back in the hut with almost nothing on the board. Pakistan started off tentatively and looked defensive, as cricketing legend Wasim Akram kept mentioning tin the commentary box.
But the arrival of tons of experience in the form of Younus Khan turned the match completely on its head. Younus Khan and one-drop batsman Kamran Akmal stitched together a good stand for the third wicket and got Pakistan out of trouble with well-played half centuries.
The batting powerplay has really revolutionised the way one-day cricket it played these days and Pakistan showed a good display of that very fact today.
Over 200 runs were scored in the last 25 overs! 106 of those in the last 10 with the batting powerplay on. Misbah ul Haq scored yet another brilliant knock of sixty odd and with the help of young gun Umar Akmal who scored a fifty in his debut World Cup match, lifted Pakistan to a mammoth total in 50 overs. Something they wouldn’t have expected after the start they got.
Over 6.30 runs to get under the lights against a superior Pakistan team was never really realistic for Kenya, who barely managed 70 runs in their first match. And the result was exactly what the world and the fans back home in Pakistan expected. The Kenyans had no clue what was hitting them when the Pakistani bowlers took the field. Umar Gul picked up 2 wickets. But the performance to cherish was captain Shahid Afridi’s 5 wicket haul. He picked up wicket after wicket at a miserly economy rate as the Kenyan batsmen just couldn’t pick his variations. Only Collins Obuya managed to get a few runs on the board but he too fell to Pakistan’s dynamic captain.
It seems like all the top teams have done well so far against the minnows. Its left to see if they can replicate it against some of the bigger oppositions. Pakistan will know that especially well.
