Group D is very much similar to Group B because it is incredibly hard to determine what teams will progress. Pakistan should be able to top the group and qualify for the Super Eight’s but Bangladesh and New Zealand’s future will be uncertain as both teams can play some really good cricket or they can be very bad. In Sri Lankan conditions the spinners will be crucial and for Pakistan if they are to go far Saeed Ajmal will have to continue his run of form. Brendan McCullum looks to be in form after slogging 91 against India only a few days ago and if he can have a good tournament New Zealand will progress to at least the Super Eight’s. Tamim Iqbal is an on or off player but when he is on Bangladesh often do very well so they need Iqbal to have a good tournament with the blade if they are to upset a few teams.
Pakistan – Saeed Ajmal
Saeed Ajmal has had one of his best years in his career, he is the top spinner in world cricket by far at the moment. He will look to thrive on the Sri Lankan pitches where they surface will assist him and his variations so he will be aiming to take quite a number of wickets this tournament. The 34 year old has played 42 International T20’s having taken 60 wickets in those matches he also only concedes 6.03 runs per over which will benefit the Pakistan team no doubt.
New Zealand – Brendan McCullum
It look as if New Zealand’s chances to get far in this tournament were slim when McCullum was out of form but now that he slogged 91 off 55 it seems things look brighter. McCullum has had a very inconsistent year and he will need to prove to a lot of critics that he can score runs consistently like some of the other big hitters in the game. Although having quite a tough year McCullum’s record is tremendous having played 48 matches and averaging 36.07 at a strike rate of 130+ which would worry some bowlers.
Bangladesh – Tamim Iqbal
When Bangladesh had a poor run of form one man who was not performing was Tamim Iqbal but ever since he regained some of his form Bangladesh have looked like a much stronger side. Iqbal will need to score runs in this tournament if Bangladesh are to progress since they need a good start so they can release pressure. Iqbal is a very inconsistent player but then again he can have a few matches where he scores a lot of runs and hopefully that is the case for Banlgadesh’s sake. With an average of 20.95 and a strike rate of just over 100.00 it doesn’t give justice to how good Iqbal is at his best.
Pakistan Last 5 T20 Matches – LWWWL
New Zealand Last 5 T20 Matches – WLLLL
Bangladesh Last 5 T20 Matches – LWLWW
Pakistan will be too strong against New Zealand and Bangladesh and will defiantly top the group. New Zealand should scrape past Bangladesh but then again Bangladesh are capable of the odd performance which can stun the top teams.
1st – Pakistan
2nd – New Zealand
3rd – Bangladesh
