Rain was a big influence in the first 2 matches in this inaugural Sri Lankan Premier League and hopefully the rain will hold off for Uthura and Wayamba’s first match of the tournament. Wayamba are a early favourite in the tournament and also have previous Champions League experience and will be tough to beat in this tournament. Uthura have been hit with injuries with Shakib Al Hasan and the quick Fidel Edwards being withdrawn due to injury. Wayamba have a lot of big names in their team including the legend in Chaminda Vaas. Muttiah Muraliatharan vs Mahela Jayawardene
Muttiah Muraliatharan has been more than useful whenever he takes part in these high paying T20 tournaments like the IPL where he plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore alongside Chris Gayle. Mahela Jayawardene also plays in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab but he has plenty of T20 experience under his belt with 124 matches which includes 2 hundreds. Muralitharan has 125 matches to his name, one more than Mahela and with an economy rate of 6.36 he is no mug with the ball even though he is well past his prime.
The legendary spinner Muttiah Muraliatharan will lead the Uthura team. Uthura have 8 available overseas players and will be hard to pick from them. Kevon Cooper who featured in the Rajasthan Royals campaign in the IPL this year is a strong signing. Imran Farhat has proven he is deadly in the T20 format with a strike rate of 140+ and averaging 30+ per game. Samuel Badree has a economy rate of 4.59 in 43 T20 matches and could prove to be a weapon when things get tight The last overseas spot could possibly go to David Miller or Rob Quiney who both can clear the boundary quite easily.
Mahela Jayawardene who is always entertaining to watch will captain Wayamba who are the early favourites in the SLPL this season. Abdul Razzaq has a marvelous record in the T20 format and should be guaranteed a starting XI place in this first match. Kemar Roach the fast West Indian bowler could prove a lot of entertainment with his good bouncers. Brad Hogg has been a star since returning from retirement and played with the Rajasthan Royals this season and was a weapon used very effective and could prove the same on the Colombo pitch. Umar Akmal was a good signing for Wayamba and he will be very useful if he can find form.
