5th ODI: Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe at Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium, Sharjah, Feb 19 - 2018, Cricket highlights
Afghanistan have been a dominant force in the ODI series and once again they came up with a dominating performance, especially with the ball in hands, as they defeated Zimbabwe by a massive margin of 146 runs in the fifth ODI. Defending a lowly target of 242, the Afghanistan spinners trapped the Zimbabwean batsmen in their web and by picking up 8 out of the 10 wickets, bowled the visitors out for a humiliating score of 95. In doing so, they wrapped up a 4-1 series win for their team.
The target was certainly chaseable, but Zimbabwe needed a strong performance from their batters, which they didn’t get. Just like the previous two matches, they failed to counter the Afghanistan spinners and were once again dismissed for a paltry total.
Other than the 46-run partnership between Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine, there was hardly anything to speak about the abject batting display by the visitors. The middle-order was simply bamboozled by Sharafuddin Ashraf and Mohammad Nabi, each of them picking up 2 wickets apiece. The four wickets reduced Zimbabwe down to 77 for 6 in a space of 19 balls.
Ervine showed some fight and tried hard to bring his team back in the contest. However, the Afghanistan spinners were just too hot to handle for them. This time around, it was Mujeeb Zadran, who provided the breakthrough as he cleaned up Ervine (34) with a quicker delivery.
The finishing job was done by none other than Rashid Khan, who simply ran through the lower-order and picked up three wickets in no time. The leggie was duly rewarded with the Man of the Series award for his outstanding contributions with the ball right throughout the series. In this match, he also contributed with the bat, having scored a 29-ball 43.
