Tri-Series Final: India vs Bangladesh at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Mar 18 - 2018, Cricket highlights
It was a final worth watching again and again, at least for the Indian fans. Just when everyone thought that they are down and out of the contest, Dinesh Karthik played an absolute blinder of a knock to help his team win the Nidahas Trophy.
Karthik came into bat when India needed 34 to win off the last two overs. The batsman at the other end, Vijay Shankar, was struggling to put bat to ball and had scored only 12 off 15 balls. At this stage, Bangladesh were on right on top and with Rubel Hossain – their best bowler of the night – bowling the penultimate over, India’s chances of pulling off a win looked really bleak.
Under such extreme pressure kind of a situation, Karthik kept his cool and smashed the first three balls for two massive sixes and a boundary. Six more runs were scored by him in the last three balls and out of nowhere, the wicket-keeper batsman had brought India right back into the contest.
Even after 22 runs were scored off that over, India still needed 12 to win off the final over. From Bangladesh’s point of view, the quota of their main bowlers was completed and they were left with only Soumya Sarkar to bowl the last over. He started off well, giving away just three runs off his first three balls. Vijay Shankar was finally able to get a ball away for a boundary, which brought the equation down to 5 off 3 balls. He, however, was out on the very next ball, which meant that India needed to get the same number of runs off the last ball. Fortunately for them, the batsmen had crossed when the wicket fell and it was Karthik, who was on strike.
He had already brought India back in the contest by scoring 22 runs off the penultimate over and he didn’t miss out on hitting the last ball out of the park to cap off a memorable win for his team.
