16th Match: Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Stars at Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney, Jan 4, 2017, Cricket Highlights.

There are some matches which we remember for years to come. The game between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars was one such match, which went all the way down to the wire.

Chasing 167 for victory, the Thunder were off to a blazing start with Kurtis Patterson toying with the Melbourne Stars bowlers. His quickfire 28 off mere 18 balls helped his team to get 38 runs on the board in 4 overs. However, he wasn’t able to continue for long enough and was dismissed in the very next over by Scott Boland. Ben Hilfenhaus, then, struck twice in the space of 4 deliveries to send Blizzard and Watson back in the hut. From 38/0, the Thunder were reduced to 44/3 at the end of the powerplay.

The two left-handed batsmen, in Eoin Morgan and Ben Rohrer, were at the middle and had to share the responsibility of steadying the run-chase. Both of them did the job pretty well as they strung a 40-run partnership and got the innings back on track.

Although Morgan started off slowly, he was quickly able to change the gears and scored better than a run-a-ball to bring up his half-century. It was really a priceless innings from the Englishman, as it gave Sydney Thunder an outside chance of not only winning the match but also to stay alive in the competition.

The match hung right in the balance and with 33 runs required from 18 balls, it could have gone anyway. Hilfenhaus and Boland, both, were brilliant for the first five balls in the 18th and 19th over, but it was the last ball from both the bowlers, which went for boundaries and brought the equation down to 16 from the last over.

Hilfenhaus, once again, started really well as he gave just 2 two runs off the first two balls. The third ball went for a six with Pat Cummins finally able to find the middle of the bat. On the next ball, the batsmen took a single, which brought Morgan back on the strike. He failed to connect the fifth ball, and as a result, could only score 2 runs. This resulted in the Thunder requiring 5 runs to get off the final delivery or at least a four to take the match in a super over. But Morgan had different plans in his mind. He was aiming for a maximum and to his advantage, got a perfect delivery from Hilfenhaus, which he launched straight back over the bowler’s head for a stunning six.

It was really a fabulous effort from Eoin Morgan, who single-handedly guided his team to victory in a crackerjack of a contest.
