Despite getting off to a rocky start, losing three of their openers after just the first three overs, Kolkata Knight Riders made a phenomenal comeback and accomplished the 169-run chase thanks to a strong partnership between Yusuf Pathan and Manish Pandey.
It was a fight to the very end, as the breakup of the partnership that had been carrying the hopes of every Knight Riders fan on their shoulders, suddenly caused the thought that the Riders might not actually "make it" after such a heroic effort, to start looming in the shadows.
It was Yusuf who had his wicket taken at the 14th over, underestimating the speed of a ball from right-arm fast-medium bowler, Chris Morris; finding himself slightly off balance, it flew off the top edge of his bat and right back into the hands of Morris, for a painful halt to the momentum of Kolkata.
However, rather than sweep in for the kill, the Delhi Daredevils found a way to fumble the immediate advantage that had been handed to them, and to allow the Kolkata Knight Riders to gallop past them again and snatch the win.
Despite the upset by the Riders, outstanding performances were recorded by the Daredevils, particularly via Rishabh Pant, who stood his ground against the lightning pace of, amongst others, Umesh Yadav, who could not seem to find a crack in the stance of Pant.
Sanju Samson also gave a noteworthy opening performance, ending on 39 runs after he suffered victim to Umesh's fiery shot that would have been better respected than attempted, much to Samson's demise, as he then edged it behind.
Delhi Daredevils are in want of consistency in execution, and could learn much from the "fight-from-behind" power that Kolkata Knight Riders have shown in today's match. Time yet remains for fixed predictions to be made for the trophy contenders, but they could very well come from today's encounter.
